On the final day of the CIF-San Diego Section Masters wrestling tournament as usual it was the Poway High Titans that ran away with the overall team title but it was Brawley Union that stole the show for the Imperial Valley.

Brawley tied Carlsbad for third place with 140.5 points behind La Costa Canyon (153) and Poway (251) and will send five wrestlers to the state tournament at Southwest High on Saturday.

“I’m proud of the kids. They wrestled tough and we had a good tournament, not a great one, but still a good tournament,” Brawley head coach Tony Leon said. “It was good to have a good tournament at home where the support from the Valley was just great to see.”

Day two of Masters started with 11 Valley wrestlers competing and ended with only seven standing.

Central Union High’s Micah Perez wrestled in the 105-pound finals but he was unable to win it all taking second place.

Brawley had four wrestlers in the finals as well as two in the consolation finals.

The Wildcats’ Oscar Lizarraga won the 127-pound title with a quick 1:06 pin over Ricky Haynes of Bonita Vista. Then Sawyer Smith took second at 137 before Mitchell Maya won 142 after finishing second last season.

“I can say that I wasn’t as sharp on the first day of wrestling but I was able to pick it up and wrestle my way into the finals,” Brawley senior Maya said. “In the finals all I wanted to do was to just keep going after him with pressure and heart.

“When I won all I could think about was that it was for everyone, Brawley, our team, our coaches everyone who helped me,” he said.

Brawley’s Anthony Carmona placed second at 152 to qualify for state.

In consolations Brawley’s Arthur Carmona (105) placed fourth while J.L. Mayo (147) was able to come from behind and win third hitting a desperation throw with seven seconds remaining in his match.

“In that final match the only thing that was going through my mind was I’m not going to lose. I knew it was going to happen, he was waiting for the throw but I hit it anyway,” Mayo said. “It was a do-or-die moment for me. It could have been my last match of my high school career or just my last match of the day and now I’m going to state.”

Imperial High’s Tony Ramos placed fourth at 127.

All five Brawley wrestlers including Central’s Perez will next compete in the state tournament Friday and Saturday in Bakersfield.

“Last year I qualified for state but I didn’t get to wrestle because of an infection,” Maya said. “And ever since I saw that mat I’ve been hungry ever since and now I’m just going to go all out because it’s my last chance to do this.”

With a long weekend of wrestling now over it pulled in some good results.

“I think the tournament ran exceptionally well. We got a ton of support and with the help we couldn’t have had such a great result,” Southwest athletic director Craig Lyon said. “We were happy to have it and it looks like we will have it again in the future but for right now we need some time to recover after this one.”
